My son and I went to see Fiddler on the Roof this last weekend. He turned 14 yesterday, so it was an early birthday present. I hadn't seen it in such a long time and had forgotten what a great story it is, although somewhat sad at the end. And the music - well, it is definitely one of my top two favorite musicals of all time, as far as the actual songs go.
I have an especially soft spot for this musical because we did it in high school - let me amend that...we did the first half in high school. There was no way we were pulling off the 3 hour full production. I was part of the cast and had several roles - villager/chorus milling around in the background, ghost in a graveyard for the dream sequence...you get the idea. I was happy to stay on the fringes of the production and play my small part. I'm not a center-stage kind of person, but it was fun to be involved. So this play in particular brought back some good memories.
Since this is the first time my son had ever been to a production like this, I wondered how he would like it. So it brought a smile to my face when I asked him on the way to the car what he thought and his answer was, "Well, it makes me want to see some other shows." So, it would appear that I have won over yet another new theater convert. The only one who hasn't been to a Broadway show yet is my husband, but his turn is coming, I'm just waiting for the right show. Phantom of the Opera or Les Miserables would be perfect, but I may have to settle for something else. Maybe if Fiddler on the Roof comes again...
