Be careful what you wish for

I have been wishing for new appliances. Well, more accurately, I've been wishing for ours to die so I can justify getting new appliances. I'm getting my wish...kind of. However, I now realize I was HUGELY mistaken to wish for such a thing.

Our dishwasher was accomodating a few months back - it had been terminal for quite awhile, so it was no surprise when it finally quit for good. But we knew it was coming and took our time looking for a new one because even though it's inconvenient, it's not that big a deal to wash dishes by hand for a few weeks.

Not so with a refridgerator. VERY inconvenient when it goes out unexpectedly...late in the day...when you have in-laws coming that evening.

Late yesterday afternoon, younger daughter informed me that her ice cream bar was a pile of mush. Which it was, along with every other popsicle/ice cream type item in the freezer. Everything else was still semi-frozen, so we hauled it all out to the extra freezer in the garage. Fridge still seemed to be cooling, but when I got home from chimes practice at church, dear husband informed me a repairman was on the way because the fridge wasn't cooling anymore either. Diagnosis: Burned up switch and compressor. Estimate: $600. Solution: New fridge. Wish granted.

HOWEVER, by then it was 9 p.m. and we had a fridge full of food that I really didn't want to go bad, and my two brothers-in-law showed up just as repairman was leaving. I think I said hi on my way over to our next-door neighbors. I borrowed coolers from him, ran to the gas station and paid $13 for 6 bags of ice, and start shifting food into coolers.

Which works fine for overnight. But this morning, dear husband went with his brothers to Kennedy Space Center and will be gone all day. Tomorrow he has to work all day. I am researching prices but I'm not making a major appliance purchase on my own. All of which means we are going to be without a fridge, working out of coolers, for at least 2 more days. Ugh.

This new fridge better be worth it.

And I'm going to be more careful what I wish for, because getting it isn't all it's cracked up to be.
