7 Food Fast - Day 1

It's been nearly a year since I've written a blog post. This last year has been busy and challenging, especially the last few months, which I will share more about later. Since today is also the first day of the 7 food fast that I'm participating in with my sister and several of her friends from McPherson, this first one back is going to be short and sweet. This week, through Friday, I am only eating 7 foods plus water to drink: chicken, eggs, spinach, homemade bread, cheese, rice and blueberries. If you want to know more, read the book "7" by Jen Hatmaker. It just might change how you look at everything - consider yourself warned. Things I learned today: - I snack and graze throughout the day WAY more than I ever realized. - Freshly baked bread is good, but it just isn't the same without butter to go on it. - When I focused on the food I couldn't have, it was really hard, but when I focused on friends/family/work that needed to be done, it was much easier. - I take food for granted - I didn't think I did, but after one day of this fast, it is crystal clear that I totally do. - It is horrifying to imagine the agony of the millions of people who go to bed hungry, literally starving, every day. May God show me how to do what I can to change that reality. - I think a true (non-eating) fast would kill me. I am not even kidding. - God has greatly blessed me and I am so oblivious sometimes, ok, most of the time. I want to develop an attitude of gratitude that is daily habit, rather than an occasional, sporadic occurrence. - Smells alone nearly did me in more than once today. - Things that I would usually choose (like water to drink) become burdensome when that choice is taken away and they become the only option. - I have a sneaking suspicion that this week is going to teach me a lot about myself and clarify some of the things God has been trying to tell me lately. - I miss popcorn and it's only been a day. - Saturday cannot get here soon enough. - It feels good to blog again.
