It seems like 2010 was just beginning and now it's all over already. Every year time seems to go faster and faster - it's a little scary sometimes. Days and weeks go by in a blink of an eye and suddenly everyone is a year older.
I don't generally make "resolutions" per se, but I do tend to think about things that I want to do differently this year than last. So in 2011, there are a few things I want to change...
1. I want to schedule in more time for fun. My life is revolves so much around everyone's schedule that it seems that when there is a free moment, I'm too tired to enjoy it. Plus it all becomes so...well, routine I guess - I keep track of days by who has to be where at what time. I think some scheduled fun time would be helpful.
2. I want to be better about keeping in touch with my far-away friends. Now that we all have families, communication amounts to a random phone call or email/Christmas letter, and if we're really lucky we might get to spend a day or two together once every year or two. Again, sad as it may be, I think I need to actually schedule time on my calendar so there is a designated time to call, skype or chat with specific people in order for it to happen.
3. I want to be better about getting together regularly with our friends here. I know for a fact this has to be scheduled or it won't happen because everyone I know is just as busy as we are. My goal is one social evening a month, which right now seems doable, so I hope we can make it happen.
4. I want to stay on top of the kids' schoolwork. This is an ongoing issue. They are pretty good about getting it done, whereas I don't always get things graded as promptly or lesson plans done as timely as they should be. I need to set aside time dedicated to this if it's going to happen.
5. I want to be better about planning meals and menus out ahead of time so I am not scrambling to make meals at the last minute. This happens alot and means we end up eating much more prepared/fast food than I would like. I have done it in the past and it worked well for the most part but like many other things, it's fallen by the wayside in the busyness of the last few years. I think it's time to resurrect menu planning again.
Looking back at these things, it would appear that my New Year's resolution could be summed up in two words: Time Management.
I think the new day planner I got will help, since it will be with me everywhere I go. In the past, I relied on my master calendar in the kitchen that has everything that is going on. This works great, except when I'm away from my kitchen and someone wants to know if we can get together or participate in an event and I can't give them an answer because my calendar is at home. I'm hoping that by having everything also on my portable calendar, we won't miss out on things because I'll know when we have available time and when we don't.
Speaking of time management, I did get my dear husband's birthday enchiladas in the oven on time today and now we are ready to eat a decent time...the timer just beeped. One meal down, I don't even want to think about how many to go, but baby steps, right?
