Gymnastic competition season...

officially begins this weekend. I'm so excited! The girls haven't done a meet since last April, so they are ready to show off all their hard work, and I'm ready to watch. This year is extra exciting because it's the first year that they are beyond compulsory levels so they have their own music and routines which is much more fun for them to do and us to watch.

They are both competing the same level this year - preparatory optionals (between level 6 and 7), but in different groups because my older daughter has scored out of level 6, but the younger one has not. One would think that this would mean they would compete at the same time or at least the same day. Most of the time this is how it works. This meet is not one of those times. They are not only not in the same session, they are on two different days, one tomorrow and one Sunday. Which means two trips to University of Tampa and two days of paying admission. I'm really hoping this is the only time this happens.

My younger daughter gets to go first bright and early tomorrow morning - warmups/stretching start at 8:00 a.m., which means we get to leave here no later than 7:15 a.m., which means I need to start on her hair by 7:00 a.m., which means we need to be up no later than 6:15 a.m. to make sure everyone has time to eat breakfast and get ready. She is nervous about tomorrow, but I know she will do well. Our motto is "Do your best and have fun." The scores are secondary, even though we all like to see good ones as often as possible. :)

My older daughter gets to wait until Sunday afternoon. The benefit for her (other than the obvious - not having to go first and not have to be up so early) is that one of their friends is coming with us to watch her. This friend is also a gymnast but now goes to a different gym than we do. However the girls are still good friends and try to get together as often as they can, which is helped by the fact that she lives one block over from us.

I'm going to enjoy every minute of this season because it may be their last one competing as gymnasts. There are many factors that play into this and they will be involved in other athletics even when the days of gymnastics are over. But this sport has been a part of our lives for 8 years and has become such a huge part of our daily life that I really and truly can't imagine what it will be like when they are finished with it, whether that is at the end of this season or whether it is down the road. I'm so thankful they have had these opportunities and pray that we make the right decisions about what is best for everyone when the time comes.

But for now, we have this season to enjoy and I intend to do just that! Go girls!

  1. I do know you will handle it well. I also know you never can take something away without replacing it with something else. Best to be intentional and let everyone help in that process. So happy with all of you and your achievements though the years. Ive enjoyed it also.
